Framework
Coding
Each of the two interrelated CCC Terminologies use five alphanumeric characters to code each diagnosis and intervention concept/data element/label. The coding structure is based on 10th Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) (WHO, 1992). It consists of a five character alphanumeric code with the core concept consisting of three characters.
- 1st is an alphabetic character representing the Care Component
- 2nd and 3rd characters are two numeric digits representing the major category for Nursing Diagnosis or Nursing Intervention
- 4th character is blank or one decimal digit representing a subcategory, if used, for Nursing Diagnosis or Nursing Intervention
- 5th digit representing the qualifier for either terminology.*
* Qualifier for CCC of Nursing Diagnoses uses one of three Expected Outcomes and/or Actual Outcomes and one of four Action Types.

The Terminologies are coded as follows:
- 1st Alpha Code: A to U Care Component
- 2nd.3rd Digits: 01-nn Major Category
- 4th Digit: 1 to 9: Sub-Category
- 5th Digit: .1.,2. or .3 Outcome Qualifier or 5th Digit:.1, .2, .3, or .4 Action Type Qualifier
