Dr. Virginia K. Saba, EdD, Honorary PhD, DS, RN, FAAN, FACMI, LL

Dr. Virginia K. Saba has had an impressive career in Informatics as well as healthcare information technology (HIT). For over a 40 years, she has pioneered and spearheaded Nursing Informatics (NI) nationally and internationally. She has also advanced nursing knowledge through the development of a comprehensive terminology/classification of nursing – Clinical Care Classification System (CCC). She conducted many of the first workshops on NI giving lectures on the new NI specialty not only in hospitals and universities, but also at national and international conferences. She promoted the acceptance of NI as a new nursing specialty by nursing’s professional organizations, namely the ANA and NLN; followed by the development of its professional requirements, standards, and certification for NI; and endorsed its inclusion as an integral part of nursing practice, administration, education, education, and research. She further instituted early academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including the development of new and innovations academic materials which resulted in the co-authoring of the first textbook in 1986, with Dr. McCormick Essentials of Nursing Informatics (last edition -6th Ed in 2015). Dr. Saba has also authored several other books including her most recent publication entitled Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System: Users Guide 2nd Ed. which provides a complete overview of the CCC System (V2.5). She has published widely, and has served on numerous national and international technology and standards committees.
Dr. Saba has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Nursing Living Legend Award and the Saba Award presented annually in her name by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). She is a Distinguished Scholar, Emeritus at Georgetown University, Adjunct Professor at Uniformed Services University, George Mason University, and at several other universities and is a Retired Officer in the US Public Health Service. Dr. Saba is a graduate of Skidmore College, Columbia University, and American University; and received honorary doctoral degrees from University of Maryland, Excelsior College, University of Athens, Athens, Greece, and University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, Kuopio, Finland.
Dr. Saba is a resilient advocate for nurses and for the recognition of nursing’s contribution to healthcare in the electronic health record systems. She is a consultant in NI and the Clinical Care Classification System which is not only a free standardized coded nursing terminology, but also an Information Model as the framework for documenting nursing practice in the current EHR Systems.
